G-d Of Fire By Sherry Lush

In Torah portion Shemini, Pastor Mark brought out the terrible end of Nadab and Abihu. They had a big problem with the fire of G-D.

Our G-D is all knowing and all powerful. All boundaries are exceeded by His mercy and grace. He is good to all. He died to bring salvation to the world. G-D is love, and at the same time He just and fair and He will judge. He is also the G-D of fire. Hebrews 12:29 tells us our G-D is a consuming fire. He appeared to Moses in Exodus 3:2,3” “And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.”

Fire that did not consume surely got the attention of Moses! And remember who was visible in the flame? This is amazing!

On the day the tabernacle was being dedicated, we read the following:
Leviticus 9:24: “And there came a fire out from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces.”

It is interesting to note that up to this point, all of G-D’s instructions were being followed just as He said, and the fire that came from Him brought great awe.

Leviticus 10:1-2: “Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.”

Nadab and Abihu went outside the boundaries of what G-d had given them. They decided their way would be better than what God had instructed, and the fire of G-D destroys them.

Is there something here to which we should pay close attention?

In the Brit Chadasha, we are told our works will be revealed with fire (I Corinthians 3:13), and our faith which is more precious than gold will be tried by fire (I Peter 1:7).
G-D’s instructions are to be honored and obeyed. They are all for our good, because He is good. He builds our spiritual muscle with fire, and fire will reveal the motives that propel our works. Our G-D is all powerful and to be greatly honored. May awe and honor and reverence for Him always be reflected in our actions and obedience to His Word.
